Maia Skin Essentials began in 2016, from a profound concern about the escalating plastic waste in our world. Walking through store aisles, I was overwhelmed by the sheer volume of products wrapped in layers of plastic. I questioned how much more harm we were inflicting on our planet. My research during my thesis on repurposing materials in interior spaces had already highlighted the growing garbage crisis and its devastating effects on our oceans and wildlife. I realized that every time I purchased products wrapped in excessive packaging, I was contributing to this environmental disaster. Determined to make a difference, I set out to create something truly sustainable—products that are kind to the planet, free from unnecessary waste.
Initially, we chose glass jars, believing they were a more sustainable alternative. Each jar came with a cloth bag crafted by the Dreams Foundation, an NGO which supports underprivileged women. However, we soon discovered that recycling glass consumed more energy than recycling plastic, and broken glass posed a hazard, particularly to street animals who scavenge for food. This realization was a turning point for us.
Then, something transformative happened. Limbu, my beloved dog, entered my life like an angel, reshaping my perspective. From the moment he arrived, it felt like we were destined to walk this path together. Through his eyes, I began to understand the silent suffering of countless street animals. Winter nights became unbearable, not because of the cold, but because I imagined the plight of animals with no shelter. Summer days were equally harsh, with no shade or water to offer relief. Diwali, once a joyful occasion, turned into a time of dread as I saw the fear in the eyes of dogs, cats, and cows amid the chaos of fireworks. Limbu’s gentle presence inspired me to act.
We began to explore how we could create something more meaningful—something that wasn’t just a product but a purpose. And so, Maia Skin Essentials was reborn. Every decision, every ingredient, every detail was chosen with love, compassion, and a deep desire to make a difference—not just for people but for the animals who share our world. Limbu taught me that while we can’t change everything, we can start somewhere.
